MetaGait

A neurorehabilitation device: gait simulator with VR games and remote supervision by a doctor

MetaGait

Mechanically, MetaGait works like the Qaylaber gait simulator: the patient is held upright and moves the handles, and the legs make stepping movements. A sensor sends every step into a game, the data is stored on a server, and the doctor can supervise rehabilitation remotely.

Adult MetaGait with an electromechanical drive. The motor is for patients who cannot stand on their own: it lifts them smoothly upright, and the session then runs as usual.

How MetaGait works

  1. 1

    Session

The patient is held upright and moves their arms, and the device simulates walking.

  2. 2

    Sensor

Counts steps and records step length, route, time and speed.

  3. 3

    Server and app

The data is stored on a server and shown in the app.

  4. 4

    Doctor

Why MetaGait has a motor

Some patients cannot stand on their own or are very hard to get to their feet. MetaGait with a motor is made for them.

The motor takes over the hardest moment and lifts the patient smoothly upright, so doctors and relatives do not have to lift the person by hand.

Once the patient is standing, the session runs as on a regular MetaGait: walking, the game and data for the doctor.

VR games

Games turn repetitive exercise into sessions patients want to continue

Every step the patient takes is carried into the game in real time. Scenes and terrain adapt to the muscle that needs work, and in multiplayer games patients compete with each other, in one room or from different cities.

Multiplayer

Skiing

Downhill skiing in different mountains. Several players race on one track.

Calm

Walking

Beautiful locations and nature for calm sessions focused on steady walking.

In development

Football

A game with a ball and a goal. We are still finishing it.

Esports

Tournaments for people with disabilities

We have already held skiing and football tournaments: six players competed and the winners received cash prizes.

The core idea

How VR helps the nervous system: signals travel towards each other

What happens at the site of a spinal cord injury when the patient trains without VR glasses and with them.

This is the nervous system of a person with a spinal cord injury.

A simplified illustration of the idea, not a measurement. Results differ for every patient; sessions are prescribed by a doctor.
